Holocaust Docufilm 'Out of the Darkness'

Holocaust Learning UK is delighted to continue to invite secondary schools and colleges to screen its specially commissioned Docufilm Out of the Darkness for students aged 12 years and above.

Narrated by Jason Isaacs, Out of the Darkness is visually engaging, challenging and thought-provoking and is intended for both classrooms and screen sharing remotely. Over 40,000 students have now been registered by their schools to view it and teachers continue to tell us that they find it a meaningful, relevant and important resource.

Out of the Darkness teaches students about the Holocaust and references subsequent genocides, helping students understand that we must all play our part in the fight against racism, discrimination and intolerance if we are to build a better, safer future for everyone.  Students and Teachers alike have described it as 'powerful' and 'incredibly thought-provoking

Out of the Darkness is free of charge to schools to screen until 31st May 2021 and fulfils the educational requirements of all UK students regarding Holocaust Education.

"Thank you so much for sharing this important film - our students had huge admiration for the survivor and her story and were very moved by it. The historical news clips and the testimonies of other holocaust survivors read by young actors really helped our students to understand the context of the holocaust during the years leading up to and including the second World War."

Schools may want to use collective worship to enable children to remember the life of HRH Duke of Edinburgh and pray for the Queen and the rest of the Royal family at this time. This collective worship offers a PowerPoint of photos with an accompanying script remembering different aspects of HRH’s long life and the chance to pause and reflect on what a life well-lived means for each one of us today.

Video Resources for RE: Real People Real faith

The Pan-Berkshire SACRE hub has commissioned a series of interviews filmed in locations across Berkshire, featuring local faith communities answering questions about their faith. They include Hindu, Shia Muslim, Anglican and Baptist Christian, Reform Jewish and Sikh faiths. You can watch them here

Two questions, specific to each key stage, were asked across the range of venues, and in most venues several people answered each question. This allows pupils and teachers to explore some of the diversity both between and within faith communities.

The same six communities were interviewed at each key stage.
Each film has a page of notes outlining the key questions and concepts, with a brief summary of the answers and some suggested follow-on activities (accessible on the NATRE site here).

Baha'i resources

The following new resources are available

·      Elevate, a project initiated by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the UK has lots of free video clips, quotes and images, all concerning spiritual upliftment. ‘The goal is to encourage elevated conversations, collective worship and actions in our communities and neighbourhoods which can slowly change our lives for the better.’ Check out the website for details www.elevateworld.org

·           A Baha'i discussion piece on Social Cohesion  (possibly more suitable for older students) is available from the UK Baha'i Office of Public Affairs website, www.publicaffairs.bahai.org.uk/social-cohesion  -  there is an animated film called ‘What’s happening to our sense of community’ at the end of the article which is suitable for primary phase upwards.  The video explores how reconnecting with our local communities through voluntary service can affect both loneliness and social cohesion.
